Just like us, there are so many circumstances and situations that can cause our furry friends to become nervous or anxious: moving to a new living environment, meeting new people, adjusting to new animals, traveling, you name it.
Whether your cat struggles with mild anxiety or is getting older and experiencing everyday aches and pains, cannabidiol (CBD) oil might be just what you need to keep them feeling their best.
Below we’ve provided a quick guide to CBD oil for cats including the potential benefits, how to give your cat CBD oil, and answers to frequently asked questions.
CBD and other cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system, a system of receptors present in all mammals. This system plays a key role in regulating processes and functions like sleep, pain, mood, inflammation response, and memory. Because of this interaction, CBD has the potential to provide a range of potential benefits.
CBD is most well known for its potential to alleviate everyday aches and pains and reduce mild anxiety. So whether your cat struggles with stress and anxiousness or is getting older and has mild aches and pains, CBD oil may be just what you need to help your cat feel better.
The most effective way to take CBD oil is by placing it under the tongue, holding it there for 30 seconds, then swallowing it. This improves the degree and rate of absorption of CBD into the bloodstream. However, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to do this with your cat.
Ideally, you should use a dropper to squeeze the CBD oil in your cat’s mouth, though, depending on the cat, this might not be feasible. For my unruly fur baby, I typically drop the oil on a liver treat and it works like a charm. You can also just add a dose of the CBD oil in with their wet or dry food.
A: CBD oil by and large isn’t likely to give your cat that “fuzzy haze” or "high", but there is the potential that they could feel these effects. While hemp-derived full-spectrum CBD oil will contain small amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)—the compound known for producing intoxicating or psychoactive effects—it must legally contain <0.3% THC.
A: A good rule of thumb is one drop of a 600 mg bottle of CBD oil per 10 lbs. This comes out to 2 mg of CBD per 10 lbs. CBD oil affects everyone differently, and this is the same for pets. Assess how your pet reacts to our oil and adjust accordingly, and consult with your vet if you aren’t sure.
A: When buying CBD oil for cats, there are a few things to look for to ensure you’re getting a safe, high-quality product. Here’s what we recommend:
Quality counts. Only consider purchasing pure, potent, and high-quality CBD oil.
Note: hemp seed oil and CBD oil aren’t the same things. Make sure the label clearly states that the product is hemp-derived CBD oil.
Always ask for third-party testing results to ensure you’re getting what you paid for and that the final product is safe for your cat to consume.
Less is more when it comes to CBD oil ingredients. Read the ingredients list to ensure there are no added fillers, chemicals, byproducts, or ingredients that may be toxic to cats. Ideally, you should look for CBD oil that solely contains hemp extract and a carrier oil.
Note: A very small percentage of animals have a sensitivity to MCT oil, a common CBD carrier oil. Always consult with your vet if you aren’t sure if a product is safe for your pet.
Look for broad- or full-spectrum CBD oil as this is believed to provide the greatest degree and range of potential benefits.
