With so many new and exciting cannabidiol (CBD) products popping up, you might find yourself curious about what the age requirements are, especially when it comes to shopping online. We are often asked questions like, “do you have to be 18 to buy CBD?”
While most CBD companies don’t have set age restrictions in place, whether or not you can legally buy CBD products depends on a few factors, including where you live and if the product is hemp- or marijuana-derived. To help provide clarity surrounding whether or not you have to be 18 to buy CBD products, we’ve provided a full guide to CBD age restrictions by state.
So, do you have to be 18 to buy CBD products? The simple answer is: it depends.
CBD is currently legal in the United States as the 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp-derived CBD products. The bill also mandates that federally legal cannabis plants (otherwise known as industrial hemp plants) legally must contain less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), hemp-derived CBD products will also contain less than 0.3% THC. However, the 2018 Farm Bill doesn’t specify age restrictions for purchasing these products.
So, at a federal level, people can buy hemp-derived CBD at any age. However, many states have some sort of law in place that requires people to be a specific age to purchase CBD. Some states may not have this in place, some may require you to be 18, and others require you to be 21.
The laws in place surrounding CBD can vary heavily depending on what state you’re in. With the 2018 Farm Bill, it’s legal to ship CBD within the US, but actually receiving CBD products in the mail may not be legal depending on the state.
